Sony Music settles copyright dispute with rock musicians including New York Dolls’ David Johansen

Sony Music Leisure has reached a settlement with a bunch of rock musicians who sued the label to reclaim possession of their copyrights, in response to a courtroom submitting on Friday (February 23).

Authorized representatives for Sony Music, led by Gabrielle Levin of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, knowledgeable Decide Edgardo Ramos of an “settlement in precept to settle all claims on this case, topic to documentation.”

Whereas the specifics of the settlement weren’t disclosed, the decision marks a big improvement in a lawsuit initiated in 2019. 

On this authorized dispute, New York Dolls singer David Johansen, alongside fellow rock musicians “Southside Johnny” John Lyon and power-pop artist Paul Collins, amongst others, alleged that Sony Music had rebuffed their makes an attempt to reclaim management over their copyrighted works.

The musicians’ criticism, lodged in February 2019, centered on Sony’s purported refusal to honor termination notices served by the artists.

Part 203 of the US Copyright Act, generally often called the ’35-year regulation,’ permits artists to terminate their project of copyrights to document corporations after 35 years, or 40 years within the case of rights assigned to music publishers, for any contracts signed from 1978 on.

“Johansen, Lyon, and Collins, and a whole lot of different recording artists, have served Notices of Termination upon Sony… however Sony has routinely and systematically refused to honor them,” the 2019 artists’ criticism alleged.

In line with the artists, Sony’s constant refusal to acknowledge their termination notices successfully barred them from pursuing various avenues for his or her music, be it by way of unbiased releases or agreements with different labels. This alleged obstruction, they contended, infringed upon their rights below the US  copyright regulation.

The decision of Sony Music’s lawsuit highlights a broader dialog about artists’ rights and possession throughout the music trade. A lot of artists have challenged established labels and publishers for management over their copyrighted works.
